I hid in the engineering shop, mainlining catastrophe, until the final bell rang. Once the halls cleared out I stalked through the school, head down, trying to figure out what I was going to do about Jay. There was no way I could go to that concert with him, but what was I supposed to do? Call him? Send him a text? If so, what should I say? I pushed through the outer doors and started across the senior parking lot. Maybe keep it casual, I thought. Start with a joke, and then come up with some kind of excuse. Something reasonable. Something—

I was halfway across the lot when I looked up and I was struck by a lightning flash of inspiration. I stood there, gawking like a weirdo as all around me people got into their cars, honked their horns, and sped away. When the path was clear, I hitched my backpack onto my shoulder, took a breath, and strode across the blacktop to an adorable teal convertible. Its owner was about to start the engine. I walked right up to the driver’s side and leaned on the door.

“Hi there,” I said, as brightly as I could while still sounding sane. “I’m Lucy Weaver. We need to talk.”
